Lost vs. 24

Tonight is the season premiere of ABC's hit TV show Lost. I don't know about the circles that you run in but a lot of my friends are either Lost fans or 24 fans. There doesn't seem to be a lot of bleed over.

I've watched the first 2 1/2 seasons of 24. I started with season one on DVD and I ended up watching practically 24 hours straight of 24 just to get through the season. I hate starting something I can't stop. I liked season one but I didn't love it like most my friends. I then moved on to season two and 24 hours later I had watched that season. I didn't love it but again once I started I just couldn't stop. I then moved on to season three and midway through it I put my foot down. Enough is enough. It's just not that great of a show.

Some of my main criticism of 24 is that in the first couple of seasons Jack's family made the show unbelievable. They became involved in the action but they were supposed to be normal people. I also don't like how within a 24 hour period they twist the good guys and make them bad. It's not that they are flawed and make mistakes they turn and become polar opposites of their character.

I started watching the newest season of 24 and they seem to have fixed the family problem. The still did the whole switch a roo thing with Tony being a bad guy and then becoming a good guy.

I like 24 all right but in my opinion it just doesn't compare to Lost. I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for this, but I'm curious to know what you think?

  2. Oh no you didn't!! I am in love with LOST! I don't watch 24, but I have heard that it's pretty awesome.

  3. LOST is soo much better. Seriously, the first season had polar bears. Did 24 have polar bears attacking in a tropical area? Does 24 have creepy "others"...I think not. Tonight is going to be awesome.

  4. I tried to watch Lost and couldn't get into it. It was too unbelievable and creapy to me. I've never watched 24.

  5. You guys are messed up. You're talking about 24 being unbelievable and then you're comparing it to lost? Read Monica's above statement.

The fact that you've watched that much of 24 points to the fact that you have to enjoy it at least somewhat. It's called burnout Rob, how much of something do you think you can watch before you're tired of it?

You know my opinion of Lost. I think it's ridiculously stupid. It's a disaster of a story that makes very, very little sense. So the Island has disappeared and now the 6 who got off are going to go back to the Island that no longer exists... just one of the many many pointless twists to this wreck of a story.

Even if you think 24 isn't a great show, it at least has a definite beginning and end that make logical sense. I know, they're wrapping up lost... thank God.

  6. DP, the fact that Lost rides the line between Scifi and reality makes it ok that they are not always believable. 24 attempts to be realistic and that is why it bothers me.

  7. Dan and Rob should wrestle this one out.

  8. I'm a LOST girl! We are having a party tonight at our house for the premiere!

LOST is completely creative and fabulous!

  9. I LOVE LOST!!! I'm so obssesed with the show. I have never ever watched 24, and dont think it can compare in any way!

  10. Really, no 24 supporters, I'm surprised. I'm not surprised about the Lost lovers. It's like Oprah or Dr. Phil... almost cultish. In fact, I think most people who like Oprah and Dr. Phil like Lost, you should explore that connection Rob.

  11. Ok, we watch both shows. I love both shows. BUT... they are both completely unrealistic. I enjoy the twists and turns and the putting pieces together to make the stories make sense... and honestly I find those qualities in both shows. But if we are going on the which show makes more sense or is more realistic, honestly... neither show fits that description! But I sure do enjoy them both! Thank God for Tivo!

  13. I'm a LOST girl... for the life of me, I can't get through an episode of 24... fall asleep every time. I'm a huge BAD ROBOT fan and anything they've ever produced. I'm totally psyched about Fringe (not to add another show or anything!) because it has an awesome female character who can kick butt (as in Alias) and the weird... "Lost" stuff which pretty much makes it close to perfect in my book!

At anyrate, Lost has the potential to be very confusing. When explaining episodes to my dad after its aired, Paw Paw usually just shakes his head. He can't get his brain around the fact that the island is bending time and has from the very beginning. Thank goodness for Back to the Future 1-3 because it has given me an adequate education on the space time continuum. :D I love a tv show that makes me think even if its nonsensical! Like, why the heck to the others NEVER age?

  14. Okay I'm with DP on this one. LOST is a little too out there for me. There are too many weird things that happen that they never make sense of (see Monica's comment about polar bears). I really enjoy 24 and I think this season will be better than the last. Even though they do some over the top stuff, I still love the action and surprises.
It's fun to watch episodes with Tony Dominice, who is also hooked. He is retired from Air Force Intelligence and he always says "that doesn't really happen" or "that's not really possible." But it makes for good TV and we love it.

  15. I'd actually agree with the Three Amigos on Fringe. I do think Fringe is a better show then both of them, good call.

  16. Having never watched Lost, I cannot comment. I have, however gotten hooked on 24. It is a very tense show, and I prefer to watch it on DVD. I gave my husband the first five seasons for Christmas because we already had the 6th season. We are trying to watch them in order now, and watch the new show. Makes it kind of strange, but I really like that Jack Bauer. He is kind of like McGyver only more on edge and very intense.

  17. Rob, I love both. 24 characters don't change, they were bad from the beginning, but acting good. Or in the case of this season, acting bad but really good.

I am sad to say, I didn't see the new LOST (Cause Dan is a hater as you can tell from his comments). I'm going to have to watch online.

You should watch Fringe. That is some good scifi.

  18. Danielle, the characters do change. In season one his girl that he had an afair with, the one that helped him all the time ended up killing his wife. Total switcheroo. And in this season Tony said that he really did go bad. He did a lot of bad things but then he came to his senses.
