Holds up vs. Doesn't hold up

My friend Dan Peters and I have some pretty interesting conversations. They have inspired Monica (my wife) to start a journal of various quotes that have been said during some of our conversations. I would like to include you the faithful robshep.com reader in on one of those recent conversations...

Dan believes, and is adamant, that the show Saved By the Bell doesn't hold up well. In fact he thinks it's awful. He used to like it, but now when he watches it he thinks it's horrible. I still enjoy watching Saved by the Bell from time to time. In fact my counter to Dan is it has to hold up well because it is on TV every single day. I'm not talking about on Nick at Night...it's on every morning. That means that a new audience is watching and enjoying it. So I would love for you to weigh in on the debate. Does Saved by the Bell hold up well or not? Think to yourself, if I was watching this for the first time now would I still enjoy it? Or if my elementary or middle school child watched it today would they like it? Comment.

  1. As an addition, don't go by memory... watch the show. If you haven't watched it in the last year, you're probably being nostalgic and not seeing it for what it is. I used to LOVE it. But it is a horrible show. Like the A-Team.

  2. As a little child, I had the special ability to call a spade a spade (even when I didn't know what a spade was). I watched a few episodes of Saved By The Bell and decided that I would have none of it. My little 8 year old digestive system could not stomach the music or the acting. I didn't like any of the characters. Plots- horrible. Dukes of Hazard- excellent. Smurfs- undeniably profound with incredible acting. Voltron, He-Man and G. I. Joe put hair on my 8 year-old chest. Saved By the Bell ruined my dinner a few times. Saved by the Bell is what's wrong with America today. My wife LOVES that show. But I told her- "Under the roof of this here patriarch, we will not be taking part in the dumbing down of this country. We already have people who have gone out and purchased Kazaam!" SbtB does not hold up. That's not just my opinion, it's a scientific fact.

  3. I agree. What you can not deny is its success as it lasted 5 seasons, all of which are out on dvd, spawned two spin-off series and two straight to dvd movies. The last being in 2007, 19 years after the show began. Is it still relevant today? maybe in a caricature.

dp...can't believe you are hating on the A team. My heart weeps. lol.

  4. Hating on Saved by the Bell is like hating on everything that is right and pure in this world. You might as well hate on Apple Pie, Baseball, and women. There is a good chance that you are a communist, socalist, or satanist if you hate on Saved By The Bell.

  5. I am sorry to say that Saved By The Bell is kind of like a train wreck. When it comes on, it sucks you in, it is a terrible thing to watch but you just can not look away. If it came on, I would watch it, I really would, terrible or not, I would watch.

  6. I loved both shows. I still love Tom Petty, Apple Pie, women and America. I do believe that in an ideal world communism and socialism would be fantastic systems. We of course do not live in an ideal world. Not a satanist, although I do love halloween and being scared / scaring people.

All that said, in my opinion, anonymous posts are shameful. Be proud of your opinions, own up.

Brian, I know it hurts my heart to hate on the A-Team and Saved By the Bell, again I loved them as a child / teen, but as an adult these shows are horrible.

  8. all i know is that i caught the episode the other day where Screech's hopes & dreams were dashed upon the rocks when he stumbled upon Zach & the love of his life, Lisa Turtle, kissing. (gasp!) it wasn't nearly as emotionally-charged as it felt watching it as a young child.... but still entertaining/rather hilarious in the here & now

  9. I had a similar experience with Thundercats. I loved that show. I stuck it on my blockbuster queue and watched an episode on DVD. I was sorely disappointed.

Liono was an idiot. He went traipsing off without his sword so he couldn't call the Thundercats to help him when he inevitably became trapped by Mum-ra. Liono is a horrible leader. The other Thundercats should have cut their losses and made Panthro the leader.

But I digress. Saved by the Bell is a stupid show. I watched it when I was younger, and I think it contributed directly to my inability to understand thermodynamics.

  10. Nathan, your comment made me chuckle. The Thundercats were AWESOME! Thanks for the comment.

  11. I think I agree most with betnynonnie. I enjoyed the show when I watched it growing up, and I do enjoy it now for the nostalgia it provides, but when I watch it now I do wonder what I liked about it so much when I was younger. Do you really think young kids and teenagers are tuning in to watch it for the first time, or is it just all of us "old folks" who watched it growing up, flip through the channels, and can't take our eyes off of it when we see it who are keeping it in syndication?

Leaving a good comment = God's blessing on your children's children.

Leaving a bad comment = a curse that will cause all of your children to be born bald and naked.
