3 Questions

People often tell me that they don't leave comments on blogs because they are afraid they will say something stupid. I get that. I often delete a comment 3 or 4 times before leaving it. I like the people who write the blogs that I read. I may not know them but I like them and I want them to like me. If I say something dumb they might judge me. But I get over my insecurity and I still leave comments. Here's why...

As a blogger I know that comments are like a blogger's paycheck. It's not easy to come up with content and when someone leaves a comment it's as rewarding as finding money in a coat that you haven't worn in a year. I love that feeling. I once found a $20 bill in my winter coat. It had just hid there for a year.

A blog is like a conversation. It's started by the blogger but it's continued by the readers. To read a blog and not comment is like having a one way conversation. I often will comment on a blog just to let the blogger know I was there. I put something like "great stuff," "that's funny," or "Love it!"

If a blogger asks a question I try to answer the question. It's the easiest way to respond to a blog.

When I do leave a comment I try to remember that I don't have to hit a home run with every comment. If I have a home run comment I will leave it, but I'd be consistent and hit singles (ie leave comments) then not even get up to bat.

So for the novice comment leavers here's an easy way to start. Answer the following 3 question.
3 Questions:
  1. What was your first car?
  2. Would you rather be forced to preface everything you say with the phrase "Tuck it in" under threat of being slapped, or
    have a magnetic head?
  3. What is your current favorite TV show?

  1. Haha! 1. A mercury topaz (much like a ford tempo). Old and rattly, paid my own $400 for it. 2. Depends how magnetic my head is.... But I'll go with that. 3. Modern Family or traffic light- can't choose.

  2. 1) REALLY old Honda Civic-it was so bad my parents wouldn't let me drive it out of our town; basically to school and back
    2) I'd rather be slapped than have a magnetic head
    3) Being Human- a show about a vampire, a werewolf and and ghost living together in a house, all trying to figure out how to be something they aren't.

  3. Firenza - didn't make it till the end of the payments. Don't really get the second question.Survivor.

  4. 1. My first car was my husband's, actually. A '69 mustang. I didn't know how to drive when we got married, but I had to learn after he went to Vietnam.
    2. I would rather use the preface sentence.
    3. My current favorite is Chopped.
Thanks for making it easy on us, Rob. As usual, you deliver a unique perspective!

  5. 1. '79 Chevette. It was so busted up it had holes in the floor board. Also, the turn signal switch broke off one day, so I just held it when I drove and pushed it in when I needed to make a turn.
    2. The preface sentence. I am too accident prone as is without having a magnetic head.
    3. Parenthood.

  6. 1. red honda crx. it was SWEET. i thought my parents were CRAZY for buying me a sports car, but as it turns out, it was genius--i could legally only have one other person in the car! i can still remember the smell of that car...it was awesome.

    2. Tuck it in, for sure.

    3. Go, Diego, Go! His "Rescue Pack" song is very catchy. Hahaha. you mean MY favorite show?! I really like Intervention, Private Practice, Gossip Girl, Hoarders. I like the murder/investigation shows also, like The Mentalist, Dexter, etc, but Andy's not a fan. So...we watch a lot of Swamp People, American Pickers, Pawn Shop/Auction shows, Fishing, Weather, Baseball....(I don't get control of the remote very often AT ALL).

  7. 1. 2000 Ford Taurus...still driving it. put over 170k miles on it!
    2. Tuck it in...bc if i had a magnetic head driving my car would be really annoying. Plus i fancy myself something of a wordsmith and i feel i would craft some delightful sentences.
    3. I really don't have a favorite tv show right now. I catch both Psych and Dexter when they come out on blu-ray. Netflix has been shipping me the first season of Whose Line so i guess thats my answer currently.

  8. 1. My first car was a 1994 red Ford Explorer that I crashed into a house and killed it. Long story...you probably know it from Stu or Jamey.
    2. I would actually prefer the magnetic head because saying something inappropriate and getting slapped would go against my people-pleasing nature and being able to stick notes to myself as reminders would be helpful -haha!
    3. My favorite TV show right now is How I Met Your Mother followed closely by anything on Food Network especially Food Network Challenge!

Hope you are enjoying the comment love, Rob!

  11. My first car was a new 1972 Pinto wagon that was always bursting into flames. I rather say "tuck it in" before everything I say. In fact, I will start doing this whether you threaten to slap me or not. My current favorite TV show is Yo Gabba Gabba. It inspires me to greatness! There's your paycheck buddy.

  12. Rob, I read your blog a lot, but never comment. I'm at school and feel a little paranoid about leaving evidence of my facebook use, although we all use it and it's okay to do so here.

I had a Ford Fiesta OH YES I DID!
    Maybe a magnetic head.
I like Our America on the OWN network. It's real.

  13. This post was great and spot on. So many times I want to comment but feel it isn't really relevant or important enough, lol. I will try to do better.

    1. I had a Pontiac Fiero and I STILL miss that car!
    2. Magnetic Head..then I could go to the battlefields and look for stuff, might be painful but I'd hate getting slapped all the time.

  17. robshep i almost always read your blog. in fact it is saved on my top sites. I do however suck as a comment leaver. so these questions definitely help.

    1) 1990 white plymouth acclaim with only 35,000 miles! i only had it for about 6 months though.
    2) i'd go with tuck it in. i would not want random metal objects sticking to my head. and what if i was friends with people who had braces? that just does not sound fun.
    3) The Office. hands down without a doubt. so sad Michael Scott is leaving.

also i'm sure you know but i got the internship and i cant wait to work with you this summer! and cant wait for the twins! i'm praying for you, monica, and them!

  34. In case you missed it, the Pinto wagon reference was a joke. I'm old, but not that old to be driving in the 1970s.

  35. ooohhhh...now I get it. Tuck it in...magnetic head would really mess up my dangly earring wearing. You are too funny...

  36. 1. Plymouth Fury stationwagon. It was easily 50' long and held the entire student body of the MHS class of 85. OK, not really, but it DID hold 16 kids after graduation.

  38. 1. 1973 Chevrolet Bel Air... Oh was I stylin'! It was HUGE ~ like driving a tank ~ and was light yellow with a tan landau top, and olive green fabric interior that was covered in plastic of course! Yeah buddy, in summer those plastic seats felt great on the back of your legs in the good ol' scorching Dallas heat!
    2. Magnetic head. Then again, I'd probably pick up some strange magnetic radio waves from alien life forces, and that would drive me crazy because I wouldn't know what they are saying!
    3. I like the comedy reruns. Everybody Loves Raymond, That 70's Show, and Reba.
