I put up both in my house. Fake in my formal Living Room with all white lights and perfectly placed ornaments. Real in the family room with handmade ornaments and the wonderful pine smell & of course colored lights for the kids.
Real evokes more of the feelings of old timey Christmases, but I have had a fake for a few years. It is a poor reproduction of the true thing. However, part of me thinks it a bit selfish to grow a tree, cut it down and display it for a couple of weeks, and then chucks it in the debris bin. Now my head is beginning to hurt thinking of all of this.
Real trees are for the birds. Really. Why bring in a dead tree to shed its pine needles in your living area. Some people like the scent, but others are allergic to it. Have you heard of Yankee candles? My real motivator for fake vs. real is simple. My tree goes up at Thanksgiving so I have lots of time to enjoy the labor. Real trees--if you can call a dead tree, REAL, begin to decompose, dry out, and even pose a fire threat. Leave the real trees, alive for the birds.
I would take a real one every year if I had the time (and a truck). I learned after getting a real one with Rob our first year of marriage, it was more cost effective and managable to have a fake one. I, too, light the Yankee Candle to balance my needs!
Real ones are better...fake ones are easier.
